Gaumukh glacier at an elevation of 3200 mts. is the well-known glacier in Garhwal
Himalayas from where Bhagirathi emerges. The glacier has its origin on the western
slopes of Satopanth groups of peaks. It is also connected with the glacier along
the northern slopes of Kedarnath peak. Therefore it is said that three great
places ofpilgrimagesGangotri (3042 mts), Badrinath and Kedarnath are all within
a few kilometers of horizontal distance from each others.
